What is WAT?
Work and Travel is a program of the American government that offers students from around the world the possibility to spend their summer holiday in the U.S., working and travelling. The program is thought as a cultural exchange program, giving YOU the possibility to experience the American culture and the American people, the possibility to experience the cultures of other countries.
…this is the official definition, but the participants to this program have described it a lot more complex and diverse, as being: an authentic life experience, a challenge, an opportunity to travel in the most unexpected places, the coolest summer, a possibility of making the most diverse friends, an unique opportunity for personal growth, a… (here, we let you fill in the dots when you return)
Beside all of the things mentioned above by the former participants, the program is also an excellent path for professional growth. Even though, the jobs are exclusively in the hospitality field, that doesn’t mean that a future engineer doesn’t have anything to gain.
First, you will, inevitably, improve your English skills, and, depending on the U.S. state you choose, maybe even your Spanish skills. Then, you will learn to work in a multicultural environment and to respect rules that are different from the ones of the Romanian employers; both things being highly appreciated by the multinational companies in our country. And, last, but not least, you will develop a greater trust in your own abilities, your motto thus becoming: “sky is the limit!”
Maybe you’ll be a little homesick, maybe you’ll feel that you work too much or maybe you won’t like the weather, but, certainly, the accomplishments and the happy moments will help you surpass them very quickly.
